Flight Of The Conchords, "Carol Brown" (2009)
find it on I Told You I Was Freaky
I've wanted to post this song for a while now, but it always seemed kind of...odd? unsurprising?...to give up a comedy song. Yes, Flight Of The Conchords have some good hooks, but it's still mostly the funny that takes us back to songs like "I'm Not Crying" or "Business Time".
What sets "Carol Brown" apart is that, more than any other FotC song, it sounds like what they'd be doing if they were just doing clever indiepop instead outright musical comedy. It's not a genre exercise like almost all of their other songs; it has a heartfelt sound, and a sweet hook in "but I'm hoping that you'll stick around."
Still, it's hilarious. It's one clever line on top of another, though my favorite is the back-and-forth between Jermaine and his choir of ex-girlfriends:
Jermaine: Love is a delicate thing, it could just float away on the breeze. So something a little lighthearted for the weekend, and I'll be back on Sunday, which will begin my top 100 songs of the decade for next week.
Choir: He said the same thing to me.
Jermaine: How can we ever know we've found the right person in this world?
Choir: He means he looks at other girls.
