About ten months or so ago, in an effort to write regularly on my blog, I decided to start posting a song every week. I called it Fine Tune Friday, which was not a very creative name (and, it turns out, also not very original). It didn't matter what the song happened to be; whether it was a song that everyone already knew or even something I'd posted before. It just had to be my favorite of the week.

It tuned out to be a great exercise. Having to go through the new stuff I'd heard and pick out one new song that drinks the milkshake of the other songs around it made me find songs that I'd overlooked before.

It also fit into my strong belief that any review pub--whether a huge magazine or a tiny blog--has to have some kind of sorting component: something that says "there's a lot of stuff on here, but if you're going to pay attention to anything, pay attention to this." It's crucial. Otherwise, you're just throwing out tons of opinions and assuming that everyone will read everything and know exactly what you mean. Almost no one is that good of a writer.

So beginning next week, Fine Tune Friday will be showing up here. Every Friday, my favorite song of the week. And if you have a new suggestion for the name, I'm totally open to it.
