Deconstructed Social Scene

2003 was as close to a musical awakening as I can claim with a straight face. I was right out of high school living in Nashville attempting to major in music. That fall a friend and I saw Broken Social Scene at 12th and Porter, a pretty amazing Nashville dive, with a crowd of maybe 15 people and to this day I still consider it the best show I've ever scene. BSS has just released You Forgot It In People and were one of the many up and coming acts out of Toronto/Montreal that have dominated my taste in music over the last 5 years. Their music cannot be summarized, which is why I love them. I won't use this space to list out the numerous acts that have ties to the band, but there are....a lot.

Next week BSS will release it's second album highlighting one of the many stand-alone songwriters in the group. 2007's Broken Social Scene Presents: Kevin Drew - Spirit If..., the first in what I assume will be a series, showcases the free-folk fuel Drew brings to the table. Both Drew and Brendon Canning (the next Social Scener to go pseudo-solo with a release on 7/22) create some great moments on their respective discs, but I think the takeaway is: collaboration is a very good thing.

Here is a taste off the forthcoming July 22nd album release Something For All Of Us... I still haven't put my finger on how it fits into the bigger picture, but it has almost everything I love about the group. It's solid.
